TagPad lets your iPad record research interviews with an animated interview schedule. The iPad fits unobtrusively into your research interviews - qualitative, quantitate or mixed methods, displaying your interview questions and recording the interview. As you move between questions TagPad tags the recorded audio by question. TagPad then automatically uploads the audio and answers from your interviews to your computer (using Dropbox) - segmenting the audio by question number. Dynamic tagging features also let you tag up your interviews for quick access and preliminary analysis.

Using TagPad
A TagPad study starts by importing a new interview file from your DropBox. DropBox is free software that allows you to quickly get files from any computer onto your iPad. It is free to register if you don't have an account:
www.dropbox.com
. Once you have a dropbox account you can upload an 'interview file', using the web or software that runs on your Mac or PC. The list all the questions that you will ask in your interview. The file should be saved in plain text format - '.txt'. If you use Microsoft Word you can use 'save as' and select 'plain text' under format.
It is a very simple format - questions are listed in the file, with sections in the interview separated with two blank lines. If a question is multiple choice you can list what multiple choice options it takes on the line after the question, starting with a '|'.

Loading a set of questions creates a new study - we can now start to conduct interviews. If you touch 'Subjects' there is a list of all the people you have already interviewed for this study.
To create a new subject click on the new subject button:
One you have a new subject you can enter their name and details and then touch 'record' to start the interview. As you conduct the interview simply hit 'Next' to move the interview onto the next question. Answers to questions can be typed in the box on the right hand side and those answers will also be saved to your DropBox. TagPad supports both free text and structured questions. At any time you can jump back or forward in the interview by simply touching different questions.
Once you click 'Stop' the timeline will update to show your recorded interview. You can see that the different questions are shown on the timeline, and if you drag the playhead (the triangle at the top of the screen) you can quickly jump to a specific part of the interview. The timeline shows the questions that you asked at different parts of the interview. Each section is highlighted with a white large number, and each question within a section by a smaller grey number:
You can then click 'Record' again to continue your interview.
Linking TagPad with Dropbox

DropBox creates a folder on your computer that the iPad can access to load in list of interviews questions, and to upload audio files from your interview.
